Adolescent Disorders Q & A

How we will help you with adolescent disorders

“I know I was difficult for my parents and teachers to handle because I just couldn’t play by their rules. Everything they said sparked anger in me and I just did the opposite, often mocking or insulting them. At the time, I thought that was how all teens acted and that I was being unfairly singled out. Now I can see just how disruptive I was.”

If you're experiencing major behavioral issues with your adolescent child, they could be struggling with an adolescent disorder. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are serious conditions that are distressing for both you and your child. We can help.

At Mindful Urgent Care, our team of compassionate mental health professionals will provide your adolescent with treatment the very day you choose to ask for help. You will be invited in to a comfortable front office, with relaxing music and refreshments, helping both of you feel at ease while taking that all-important first step.

Your first visit

Together with your child, you will see a psychiatric medical provider on your first visit, who will assess and work with you both to diagnose the problem. They will speak to each of you individually and together, respecting your child’s privacy while disclosing what is necessary. They will help your child understand why their behavior is problematic, and that it is a condition that can be treated rather than a personal failing. They may prescribe medication when necessary, and will recommend a treatment plan personalized to your child, including behavior modification. We recommend weekly therapy as a supplement to our care, and will provide referrals to the best providers available.

We’re with you all the way

You will be included in the discussion around how best to help your child. If the treatment team thinks it will be helpful, family therapy may constitute part of the process.

After two weeks, you will have a follow-up appointment with your child’s clinician to assess how the treatment plan is progressing, followed by a further assessment a month later. By this point, you will likely have seen an improvement in your child’s behavior, allowing you to start normalizing your relationship and increasing their performance at school. You will continue with monthly follow-up visits to evaluate your child’s progress and adjust their medication if necessary. Through all of their challenges, setbacks, achievements, and victories, the team at Mindful Urgent Care will be by their side.

If you think your child is suffering from ODD or CD, call Mindful Urgent Care or schedule a consultation online today.

What are adolescent disorders?

Adolescent disorders refer to patterns of aggressive or defiant behavior exhibited by teenagers, which are more extreme than the normal, expected opposition. The most common adolescent disorders include:

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior towards authority figures. While many adolescents rebel and resist authority, youths with ODD display aggression, and are oppositional most or all of the time. They tend to behave with defiance, spitefulness, and negativity. They often cause serious disruptions at home and at school.

Conduct Disorder (CD)

Adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) display violence and aggression, often leading to damage to people or animals, destruction of property, theft, skipping school, and other behaviors often considered as “delinquent”. Conduct disorder is a serious condition and your adolescent will benefit from comprehensive treatment.

How are ODD and CD treated?

Adolescents who struggle with defiance and conduct are often treated as delinquents, rather than being treated in a psychiatric setting. The good news is that with the appropriate help, your child can learn to behave in a way that benefits them and the people around them.

Adolescent disorders such as ODD and CD are treated with a combination of medication, therapy, and behavior modification.

Adolescents who are suffering from co-occurring disorders, such as depression and anxiety, ADHD, and substance abuse, may benefit from medication typically used to treat these conditions.

Primary treatment, however, is behavioral. Behavior modification is used to train adolescents to regulate their feelings, especially those of anger and negativity, as well as to curb behavior that will be disruptive or destructive.

In many cases, treatment provided for parents is beneficial to the family as a whole. Parents can receive training to help them use techniques that will be effective in getting the desired responses from their children. Family therapy can help all members of the family learn to relate to each other in healthier ways. Finally, parents and adolescents can learn to engage in collaborative problem solving, which asks all parties to participate in solving behavioral issues.

Adolescent disorders are often shrugged off as simple bad discipline, but they can become extremely disruptive for the youth and those around them. With help from Mindful Urgent Care, your adolescent can learn to regulate their emotions and curb problematic behavior.
