Nicholas Obertis, PA

Physician Assistant located in West Hempstead, NY

About Nick Obertis, Jr PA-C

Nicholas Obertis, PA-C, is a certified physician assistant on the team of providers at Mindful Urgent Care in New York's West Hempstead neighborhood.

Nicholas earned his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the City University of New York’s York College in Queens. He works as a physician assistant in other specialties, but is most passionate about his work in psychiatry because of the human connections that it affords him.

He enjoys making a direct and dramatic impact on the lives of his patients and their families by spending time with them in person, helping them through their darkest moments, and guiding them to a positive and transformative outcome. He particularly likes how personably he’s able to interact with his psychiatry patients.

Outside of work, Nicholas enjoys listening to the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, and is a big fan of the show’s mantra to “live your life like you’re the hero in your own movie.” He also likes to travel and is hoping to make it the Galapagos, Vietnam, and Thailand soon.

What is the most inspiring part of your career?

What I enjoy most about being a Physician Assistant, is the ability to have a direct and dramatic impact on patients and their family’s lives. I enjoy the contact that I have with them, the time spent together during their darkest moments, helping them though it and the everyday chance to bring a positive outcome into their lives.

Why did you choose to specialize/work in psychiatry?

While I did and do work in other specialties as a PA, I feel that working in psychiatry has been the most rewarding. Working in the CPEP, where patients were not doing well, and being able to return them back to themselves and their family in less than three days, is satisfying. That part makes me feel like I’m making a difference in the world and in people’s lives at a more higher level in the field of psychiatry then I did in other medical fields. In other fields, people mainly spend time in labs, or searching through textbooks to make assessments, whereas I get to look at a patient, hear their words, their thoughts, what’s going on in their life. I’m able to help make assessments and plans directly on what is in front of me, instead of in numbers.

What is the last podcast you listened to?

I listen to the Joe Rogan Experience regularly. I like him for his comedy, jokes and to enjoy a lighter subject compared to my daily work routine. I mainly like how he talks about focusing on one’s self, on adapting, pushing yourself, growing through facing challenges, and how that brings peace into one’s life. His philosophy is about letting go of your past – it doesn’t define who you are today, but you can learn from it to build your best self. A quote of his that I live by is “live your life like you’re the hero in your own movie”. This quote is what drives me to be who I am every day.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs. Personality and loving without question. How could you not want that?

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Oh, this is a long list, but my top three are the Galapagos, Vietnam and Thailand.

Testimonials

I've only had one session so far but it was amazing! I was terrified of finding a new psychiatrist because I have had some less than great experiences before but I got to see Nicholas Obertis Jr, the psychiatric physician assistant and he very quickly calmed me down and was just so wonderful and brilliant and listened to me and actually treated me like a human being which can be unsettlingly hard to find when seeking treatment! He's just one of those people that reminds you there is good in the world and hope to hold on to. Can not recommend more highly! I will be going back again!

'This place was a God send. I needed to be seen urgently and after being turned away from several places, I called Mindful. The man who answered the phone and actually thanked me for calling in and gave us a same day appointment! The entrance was a little difficult to find. (It's next to the Dress Barn not the law office). The office was nice and inviting, the office staff friendly and the wait was short. The PA that saw us was knowledgeable and responsive. I would recommend this place highly!'
