About Mike Montiel, MSPAS, MPH, PA-C

Michael Montiel, MSPAS, MPH, PA-C, is a compassionate and empathetic physician assistant on the team of providers at Mindful Urgent Care in New York's West Hempstead area.

Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York, where he first became interested in the multifaceted nature of health and the relationship between mental health and physical health. He continued his education at Touro University California in Vallejo, California, where he earned a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and a Master of Public Health.

Michael’s education opened his eyes to the importance of both preventing and treating population health and disease, as well as the dire need for mental health providers. He’s since dedicated himself to bridging the gap between physical and mental health.

He’s most inspired by managing, educating, and empowering patients at the most vulnerable points in their lives, and is grateful to be part of the amazing team at Mindful Urgent Care. There, he helps patients overcome their physical, emotional, and social struggles.
When he’s not working, Michael enjoys spending time with his puppy, Arya, a rescue terrier mix from Georgia.

What's the most inspiring part of your job?

As a compassionate and empathetic healthcare provider, the most inspiring part of my job is knowing that I am able to manage, educate, and empower those patients who have reached the most vulnerable points in their lives. I am grateful that I am part of an amazing team that helps those patients overcome the physical, emotional, and social struggles that often accompany mental and medical illness

Why did I choose to specialize/work in psychiatry?

My interest in mental health began early in my career, as I first studied Psychology as an undergraduate student at Stony Brook University. I was intrigued by the multi-faceted nature of one's health and the profound effect that one's thought processes and emotional state could have on physical health. Upon graduating from PA school, along with a degree in Public Health, I quickly realized the importance of both prevention and treatment of population health and disease, and the dire need for mental health providers in the community. I learned that I could bridge the gap between physical and mental health

When are you the happiest?

With my puppy, Arya. She's an adopted rescue terrier mix from Georgia (Southern pup!) who battled and escaped treacherous hurricanes and found herself a forever home in Winterfell, I mean NYC. :)

Where’s your favorite place in the world?

Disney World, because it's the happiest place on earth (plus, where else can I get pineapple dole whip and churros at the same time?!)

If you had your choice of one super-power what would it be?

Teleportation. I would like to see every corner of the world, but just going to the airport gives me anxiety. I would love to travel every weekend, arrive fast and get back fast, all without long flights.

I’ve been battling anxiety and severe depression for many years. The office staff is very kind, the classical music in the waiting area kept me calm while I waited but the wait wasn’t long. I was seen the moment I finished filling out the forms. My needs and concerns were listened to and addressed. I finally have a good place to be treated with understanding and compassion.

READ BEFORE YOU BOOK This practice is "urgent care" for mental health. They don't do therapy or diagnostics, only prescriptions (as told to me by the practitioner) and they don't prescribe controlled substances like Xanax (or any benzodiazapene). I was looking for a practitioner I could have an ongoing relationship with, who would understand me as a whole person, and this doesn't fit that description. In the practitioner's own words, they treat symptoms here.

Absolutely amazing experience! Zen like place amazing staff! I felt I was treated like I mattered . I recommend all that are scared to see psychiatrist. I felt in peace . The decor is nothing like doctors office. Is like a lobby in a hotel.

I had a great experience. Dr. Shiran was extremely professional, she was kind and very caring. She created a very safe environment and an hour flew by I didn't even realize. She prescribed the meds I needed for my condition and was very careful and diligent in choosing them, you could tell she has a lot of experience in this field. I am very happy I went to this place and I have finally found the mental health doctor that I feel truly comfortable with!

The doctor is very nice, very calm. They were very quick to make the appointment, unlike other offices that I had to wait weeks or months. The office is nice and cozy. The doctor helped me and explained everything to me. I really liked this place.
