James Harrington, NP

Nurse Practitioner located in Financial District, New York, NY

About James Harrington

James Harrington, NP, is a skilled and empathetic nurse practitionere on the team of providers at Mindful Urgent Care, a mental health urgent care center in New York City's Financial District.

James was drawn to psychiatry after working as a registered nurse in medicine, surgery, trauma, and intensive care, where he found himself addressing the emotional impact of his patients’ experiences in addition to treating their medical diagnoses. His medical training, natural empathy, and sharp intuition give him a unique ability to help his patients alleviate suffering and achieve their full potential.

In his practice, James most enjoys meeting face-to-face with clients from all walks of life. He is inspired by the fact that no matter a patient’s age, history, or social standing, they can always choose to grow.

He believes in treating people as partners rather than patients and strives to collaborate with them to determine the most effective treatment options, whether medication and psychotherapy or changes to lifestyle, diet, and nutrition. He loves watching symptoms improve and seeing his clients blossom.

Outside of his practice, James is happiest on the beach, and is hoping to make it to Brazil or Tahiti soon.

What's the most inspiring part of your job?

I love meeting face-to-face with diverse clients from all walks of life. It really serves as proof that no matter who they are, their age, or where they stand in a societal sense, everyone can choose to grow. I always meet them where they are at and, rather than treating them as a patient, we partner to determine the best treatment options. These can be lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, diet/nutrition and medication when needed. Of course, the best part of the process is watching symptoms improve and the client reach their full potential. I am so often surprised by how far they go.

Why did you choose to specialize/work in psychiatry?

Early in my career as a Registered Nurse, I worked in medicine/surgery, ED/trauma and Intensive Care, and I always noticed and addressed the emotional impact of what the person was experiencing, as opposed to just treating the “medical diagnosis”. I am naturally empathetic and intuitive and felt that I could use my natural abilities along with my medical education and training to help alleviate suffering and help people reach their potential.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Brazil and Tahiti!!! I love tropical weather and spending time on the beach.

When I was 8, I was pretty sure I'd be... an archaeologist when I grew up.

When are you the happiest?

When I am on the beach or when I am helping others.
