Bulimia Nervosa (bulimia) is a serious and potentially life-threatening eating disorder categorized by binge/purge behaviors, or consuming a large amount of calories in one sitting, and then purging the body of the excess calories often via vomiting or other compensatory behaviors (i.e. exercise, laxatives, restriction). In order to receive a diagnosis of bulimia, binge/purge behaviors must occur at least once a week for three months. Symptoms also include body image distortion, feeling a loss of control over consumption during binge episodes, and feeling that food controls the individuals’ life. Bulimia comes with a variety of health consequences such as gastrointestinal complications, electrolyte imbalances due to vomiting, wearing of teeth enamel or color, and more.
